Chelsea Kaplan’s Musings About Life... After Birth

OK,needanopinionhere….

Posted by Chelsea on February 05, 2008

So, as I’ve mentioned before my husband and I are having a hard time coming up with a middle name for the baby (who is due in 6 weeks…..feeling really AWESOME these days, let me tell you). We know the first name will be Andrew, after my husband’s late brother, but he will be called Drew. Of course, our last name is Kaplan, so his first and last initials will be A & K.

The middle name we’re sorta liking begins with a “W”. Here’s the question: is having the initials AWK…awkward? So much so that we should consider other alternatives? I kinda think so, my husband doesn’t, but then again, he thinks monogrammed things are yuck (and of course, this Southern, semi-prepster girl totally disagrees).

Thoughts?

I think it’s fine. There are certain 3 letter combinations that are pretty icky but that’s not one of them, at least not in my opinion!<BR>Stephanie

That’s a tough one…they aren’t great initials, that’s for certain, but it may be OK. Who really pays attention to initials unless there is a monogram!

If it was a little girl you were naming, the Atlanta transplant in me would be screaming “NO, NO, NO! It wouldn’t monogram nicely!”  But, it is a little boy…and you probably won’t be monograming a sweater for him to wear to school…so it should be okay.  :D<BR><BR>Wow…only 6 more weeks??  :D

I don’t think it’s bad at all. It won’t be noticeable except in a monogram, and then you can use the style with the last initial large and in the center!

I don’t think it is awkward. Go with it!

AWK is better than WAK.  We know a WAK (a him) and his wife, WAKette and their baby WAKlette.  they’re one WAKy family for sure.<BR><BR>So AWK is much better in my mind.

Actually, as the daughter of a stationery expert, for a MONOGRAM, the letters (in order) would be AKW (big K), not AWK.<BR>Does it make you feel weird that my MIL’s cousin’s name is Andrew Kaplan? smile

I agree with Lauren’s comment about the monogram.  It would be AKW with a big K.  As a lawyer I sign a lot of memos with my initials and I just don’t think it would bother me to sign something A.W.K.  If you love the name, go for it.

I don’t think AWK is so bad- and although towels and stationery would be monogrammed with AKW the tradionally prepster men’s shirt monograms on the pocket or cuff would monogram in the actual order of name AWK (-:  So your husband doesn’t do monogrammed shirts Chelsea? (-:

Does anyone remember Andrew W.K.??

I got hung up on the same issue! Just remember there are a TON of monogramming styles that use the surname initial as the central and larger initial and the first and middle names flank it.  Soooo… if a K w looks good to you, than go for it!

The first thing I thought of was the bloody face and long hair of Andrew W. K.  You might want to rethink that middle initial unless it’s an important statement.

Hmmm…it reminds me of naming my daughter Sadie.  I really liked the spelling “Saydie”, but once I realized it was spelled “say die”, I couldn’t get past it.  I skipped the “y” and have always been glad I did…I think it would have bugged me.  Initials probably aren’t as big of a deal, but if you think it will bother you in the future, I would maybe reconsider. smile

I am picky about initials and the way a name looks in print as well, and with four boys it has become a challenge to find three names that we both like, that sound good together, and look good in print. My third sons name is Andrew Glenn Kanning, so AGK, which I thought looked nice. Glenn is after my late grandfather, but we also considered Andrew John Kanning, so AJK. Just an option.

I would go with an R name. Then it would be A.R.K. This sounds good and looks elegant to me.

When my son was born, his initials were almost EAR…not a big deal at all to my husband, but I could not live with it.  He is now EBR. Really, you have to pick a name with the right number of syllables to have it flow when the whole name is said aloud.  That being said, you need a name with 1,3 or more syllables to go with the two syllable first and last names. Maybe I sound a little crazy, but that’s just my opinion…
