Chelsea Kaplan’s Musings About Life... After Birth
Posted by Chelsea on March 25, 2008
Thank you so much to everyone for all of your congratulations and well-wishes!
We brought the baby home from the NICU a week ago today, and fortunately, he is back to a nice, non-yellowed flesh-color. Many thanks to all the wonderful nurses and doctors in DC’s Sibley Memorial Hospital special care nursery.
The baby has been doing well - sleeping, eating, pooping… you know, the typical newborn drill. Mostly our focus has been on son #1, who at two and a half is far more work than #2. Everyone has been inquiring as to how #1 is doing - how he likes the baby, and how his behavior has changed, if at all. I’d say that the way he’s acting is probably pretty textbook. He’s interested in the baby, not not terribly so. He gets upset when he cries, and when he goes to look at him, he will almost always try to take a swing at him. The other day, for example, he bopped him over the head with a nail file. I have a feeling it won’t be the last time.
Luckily, however, #1 has not been freaking out when he sees me holding the baby. The other day, he saw me doing so and actually came up to snuggle with us. It was seriously sweet.

The Kiefer Cottage
Meet the Kiefers: a quirky, lovable family of five on a quest to transform their 1940s Kansas City bungalow into the house of their dreams. The budget is small, the dreams are big, the creativity is inspiring. Check them out - you can thank us later. Happy reading, everybody!
Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day® All Purpose Cleaner
I don't understand gals who claim to loooove cleaning. That said, I do get a certain joy from using Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day® All Purpose Cleaner to care for my home. You can't lose with this stuff...it is hard-working & earth-friendly, and will leave your abode smelling like a day spa instead of a chemical spill. Try Lemon Verbena in the kitchen and Basil in the bathroom. At only $7.99 a bottle, you can afford to pick up both!
True Blood
Um, does this even need a caption? Doubtful, but let me just say that this is the hottest hour on television. Vampires are seriously sexy (especially Eric), and on this show you get to see a lot of them--if you get what I mean. Put the kids to bed and flip the channel to HBO on Sundays at 9 p.m. to taste the fun that is True Blood.
Valentino Bow Thong Sandals
So comfy and feminine, I know I'd wear them all summer. But dang, that much money for jellies? Possibly worth the splurge. $275, nordstrom.com
New Balance Kids’ Sneakers in wide sizes
My boys have wide feet, which means finding cute shoes for them is tough. These, however, rock. Prices vary, visit nbwebexpress.com to purchase.
Zoya “Laurie” Nail Polish
This sheer pink polish is, without question, the PERFECT nude pink. Plus, the polish is free of formaldehyde, toluene, camphor and dibutyl phthalate (read: yucky crap that isn't really safe for prego gals). $6, enailsupply.com.

I have photoshop but am just learning it… but it wouldnt seem to be too difficult. that is a great picture and I’m glad that you are all doing so well.
even with the tag on the blanket and the nanny it is one of the most adorable pics I have ever seen and you will treasure it forever. Glad everyone is healthy and home! Hope YOU are doing well-
-e-
Very cute picture & you have a very beautiful family. How are you enjoying being a mommy of 2? I recently had my 3rd and completely know what you mean about #1 being more work than #2. I have 2 girls & a boy. I have a 2 yr old son & my daughters are 7 yrs old & 6 mos old. My son is definitely the most work out of all of them (so far). He climbs onto & gets into everything. But I am lucky. He LOVES his baby sister. He’s always hugging her & giving her kisses, and when she cries, he tries to pick her up. So very sweet. Glad to hear your baby is doing better. That must have been very stressful. I’ve been lucky, never had to experience that
I just found your blog - congrats on the new baby. I have a 3 month old (my third!). I am a photoshop expert so feel free to send me your photo. I’d be happy to fix it!
I am wondering why you have a nanny? I looked for a blog on this decision but can’t find one. I’m a nanny and the parents I work for are out of town pretty often for overnights. Is that the case with you?
It’s kind of different for me, being a nanny…the family I work for include me in photos, they show me and treat me like part of the family…the don’t photoshop me out of pictures. They made the choice to hire me and include me in their lives and don’t try to ochestrate moments that look as if they’re doing things on their own… I’m confused, I guess.

Um, I have a nanny who comes 4 days a week because I work. And wanting to photoshop her out of the photo had nothing to do with her being my nanny - I just wanted everything out of the background of the photo, and she happened to be included.

Hope the family you work for appreciates your ability to not jump to conclusions…..
Glad your kid is taking the new baby as part of him and not as an stranger.
Sometimes buying a toy or game to the kid and telling him his little brother brought it for him helps a lot.
Beautiful blog with great informational content. Mostly certifications related and sibling rivalry related topics are really very good. CISM dumps, JN0-141 dumps and JN0-100 dumps are also good topics. Thanks for this great sharing.
